Trois mois… Trois mois que je n’ai pas écrit d’articles sur mon blog. Mais je n’ai pas chômé pour autant. Je travaillais sur ma tenue 1784 pour une reconstitution au château de Maisons à Maisons-Laffitte : La Folle Journée du Comte d’Artois.
Three months… I has been three months since I wrote something on my blog. But it doesn’t mean I didn’t work. I was working on a complete 1784s outfit for a reenactment : The Crazy Day of the Count d’Artois (like the title of The Marriage of Figaro).
Il me restait mon anglaise et des caracos mais ce n’était pas le sujet. J’avais envie de tester des patrons jamais testés et surtout d’en modifier un qui ne m’avait pas plu à l’époque où je l’avais testé.
I had still my roundgown and some caracos but I wanted to have something new. I wanted to test new patterns and make some changes on others.
Mon dévolu s’est donc jeté sur une robe chemise que j’ai réalisée à partir du Rocking Horse Farms Chemise Gown Pattern et une lévite à partir d’un mélange du patron Wingeo et du patron de la robe à l’anglaise du JP Ryan.
I have chosen to sew a chemise gown with Rocking Horse Farms Chemise Gown Pattern and a Levite gown, a mix between the Robe à l’Anglaise of JP Ryan and the Levite gown pattern of Wingeo.
Je me suis donc documentée pour créer la tenue complète dans les bonnes couleurs et si possible les bonnes matières. Je me suis donc munie de 6 mètres de coton blanc en 150 de large pour la robe chemise plus 3m en 150 pour la jupe de la robe chemise. Pour la lévite : 3 mètres en 150 de coton bleu roi et 3 mètres de polyester doré très mou mais qui fait parfaitement illusion en 150 encore une fois.
I have spent many time on internet to have a look at the colour, the fabrics, … I have chosen a white coton for the chemise gown (6 meters) plus 3 meters for the skirt. I have chosen a blue coton and gold polyester for the Levite. The polyester makes illusion, instead of silk, but it was hard to work with it.
J’ai donc comme je l’ai indiqué modifié le patron de la lévite que j’avais essayé une fois et qui avait été une vraie catastrophe : trop grand, pas de forme comme je l’avais vu sur les gravures… J’ai donc parcouru des heures internet pour constater que le dos des lévites est souvent en fourreau. J’ai donc pris le dos fourreau du JP Ryan pour le mettre sur la lévite. Et ça matche parfaitement après entoilage de mon tissu mou bien entendu.
First time I tried Wingeo pattern, it was terrible : to big, no historical back like the fashion plates. The back of the levite is usually in « fourreau ». I used the back of the JP Ryan Robe à l’Anglaise with the other pieces of Wingeo Levite pattern. I had to sew together the polyester with the coton lining.
J’ai aussi compris à mes dépends pourquoi peu de reconstituteurs recréent la robe à la Lévite : on a l’air d’un tonneau pas ajusté! La robe n’étant pas prêt du corps, le résultat est surprenant.
I have understood also why reenactors doesn’t recreate Levite gown. It doesn’t fit anybody. This dress is terrible.
J’ai fait aussi une robe chemise comme je le disais plus haut. Pour cela pas de mystère : des rectangles, des rectangles et encore des rectangles avec des fronces. J’ai réalisé le modèle qui s’ouvre sur le devant. C’est un bonheur à porter. J’ai pu y apporter beaucoup de soin en faisant la plupart des finitions à la main.
I also made a chemise gown. It was : rectangles, rectangles and rectangles. I created the dress that opens on the front. It is wonderfull to wear this sort of dress. I spent many time finishing it by hand.
J’en ai profité pour faire un chapeau dans l’esprit de l’époque avec mes tissus bleus et dorés à partir du très bon tutoriel de la blogueuse de Couture Urbaine que vous trouverez en lien à la fin de l’article. Ce chapeau est posé sur la superbe perruque que m’a confectionnée Olympe de Décorum et Bagatelle.
Because I had time, I made a hat with the help of the tutorial by Couture Urbaine. My hat is wear on the wonderful wig created by Olympe of Décorum et Bagatel.

Challenge #3 : The great outdoors.
What the item is: Levite gown with hat
The Challenge, and how this item fulfills it
Challenge #3 : The great outdoors. The dress is made essentially to wear outside with the hat. It keeps me warm on another dress like my chemise gown.
Fabric/Materials: I used 3 meters of gold polyester (very hard to work with) for a reason of cost and 3 meters of blue coton.
Pattern: A mix with Wingeo levite gown Pattern and JP Ryan Robe à l’anglaise
Year: 1784
Notions: Matching cotton thread, silk ribbon and bias
How historically accurate is it? It is 70% accurate. I used gold polyester that looks like silk and machine to sew the biggest lines for the 30% fail. On the good side, the remaining is made by hand and I really spent time to find a way to match a maximum like fashion plates of the time.
Hours to complete: 48 hours full time job
First worn: 10th and 11th of june 2017
Total cost: 150€
Challenge #4 : Circles, squares & rectangles
What the item is: Chemise gown and skirt
The Challenge, and how this item fulfills it Challenge #4 : Circles, squares & rectangles. The chemise gown is made of gathered coton rectangles.
Fabric/Materials: 6 meters of white coton for the dress and 3 meters of white coton for the skirt.
Pattern: Rocking Horse Farms Chemise Gown Pattern
Year: 1784
Notions: Matching cotton thread, synthetic ribbon and coton bias
How historically accurate is it? 80% because I used synthetic ribon to gathered the dress and machine to sew the biggest lines. The remaining is made by hand.
Hours to complete: 48 hours full time job
First worn: 10th and 11th of june 2017
Total cost: 80€
